Post-Surgery Rehab FAQs
When should I start physiotherapy after surgery?
The appropriate time depends on the type of surgery, tissue healing, medical instructions and your individual condition. Your physiotherapist can plan rehabilitation around the precautions provided by your surgeon.
Do I need a referral from my surgeon?
A referral is not always required for physiotherapy. However, for recent surgery, it is important that your rehabilitation team understands your surgeon’s restrictions and precautions.
Can I start physiotherapy if I still have pain?
Some pain can occur during postoperative recovery. Rehabilitation should be adjusted according to symptoms, healing stage and medical guidance rather than simply pushing through pain.
Can you help after ACL surgery?
Yes. ACL rehabilitation can include progressive restoration of knee mobility, strength, balance, movement control and sport-specific function, depending on the surgical procedure and rehabilitation stage.
Do you provide home physiotherapy after surgery?
Yes. Home physiotherapy is available for patients who have difficulty travelling to the clinic.
How long will my rehabilitation take?
Recovery time varies considerably depending on the surgery, healing, age, baseline fitness, complications and rehabilitation goals. Your physiotherapist can discuss the expected milestones after assessment.
Can I return to the gym after surgery?
Returning to the gym is often part of rehabilitation, but the exercises, loads and timing should be progressed according to your surgery, healing stage and medical restrictions.
